What Aldrin has described regarding anomalous observations during the Apollo 11 mission deserves serious consideration, not because of sensationalism, but precisely because of the caliber of the observer and the operational context in which the sighting occurred. When someone with Aldrin’s training and mission-critical responsibilities reports something he cannot explain, the responsible course is to examine the claim with rigor rather than dismissal.
During the Apollo 11 transit to the Moon, Aldrin and his crewmates observed an object in the vicinity of their spacecraft that did not correspond to any known component of their mission hardware. Aldrin has been measured and careful in how he characterizes the encounter — notably reluctant to apply the word “UFO” in its popular cultural sense — while simultaneously acknowledging that what they witnessed remained unidentified.
